ROW80 Week 8: Somewhere New

(other ROW80 participants)

I’m now officially moved in to my new home!

The actual move itself wasn’t as hard as I’d feared (partly due to lots of help from my family — thank you, everyone!), but packing, unpacking, and setting up furniture still claimed most of the weekend.

As a result, I only got three evenings of editing in. That covered everything up to the ending, but I still need to do the ending itself.

With the various house- and travel-related things I’ll have to do in June, I doubt I’ll have my story ready to post this round.

My new goal will be to have a polished draft ready by 16 June, and hopefully get feedback on it that weekend. Then I’ll decide where to go from there.

Good luck and happy writing!

ROW80 Weeks 6 and 7: Soon

(other ROW80 participants)

After 7 evenings of work over the past fortnight, I’m about half-way (4,100 words) into my first edit of the story I’m working on. Before the end of the round, I’d like to finish this edit and do a second round of polishing.

Under normal circumstances, that wouldn’t be too hard.

However, I’m also preparing to move house. (The contract is signed, and I’ll get keys in the next fortnight). That’s not as big a job as it may sound — I’m only living in one room at the moment, and I’ve got lots of boxes packed already — but it will still take time.

I’m also away two weekends in June, but that may work in my favour. If I can get most of my editing done before then, these will be a good chance to get feedback on the story.

My challenge this week is to finish off the first edit.

Good luck and happy writing!

The Last Aftermath

The echoes fade, and all the world is still.
The blood of dragons smoulders in the dust.
Like a stray star, a single angel’s quill
floats slowly down, gliding from gust to gust.

A thunderous sunset finally hides its glow
behind a cracked horizon. All is black.
A dry leaf rustles. Quiet chitters grow
And furtively, the noise of night comes back.

A faint flame flares. A lantern springs to life.
Dew glistens on cold hands and empty eyes.
Light plays on shields and faces raw with strife;
What names and goals they had, this field denies.

The light is snuffed. The quiet footsteps fade.
From this destruction, nothing shall be made.

ROW80 Week 4: Intermission

(other ROW80 participants)

I had time off work this week, but between travelling, house-purchase paperwork, and the things I took time off to get to, I didn’t get any further editing done.

Now, though, the obstacles are cleared away. I’m back at home, the house is just waiting for conveyancing, and my story is mapped out and ready to edit.

(Programming is half caught up, as I went to a hackathon on the weekend.)

Good luck and happy writing!
