Beneath lush trees,
Grass runs red, orange, yellow;
Old straw, and new green.

Green grass repels
A film of yellow leaves
Into bright droplets -
beyond lawns
phalaris spears guard water,
seed-heads ready -
The cream lace sprays
Of old grass undulate, dry.
The trees —
remember -
The grassy hill
At flood tide, breaks 'cross the road
Council scrapes it back -
A lone grasshopper
Gnaws one blade in millions — lost
As much as I am -
From lush green last month
High hay bale towers rise —
Over dust, straw -
An impressionist
Paints this meadow: leaf, bud, seed
Each speck of colour -
In grass, forests:
Tiny flowerheads quiver
Before the storm -
Three feet of grass
Covers the cold hills — hiding
Deep mud-puddles
