The sun hammers
Tin roofs, fires — even heads
Dry and sick with heat.

Heat mirages
Shimmered bright and brief, hiding
The cold truth -
A cool hill breeze.
Windows close. Heaters glow red
To stretch out summer. -
wrapped up warm:
a fleece of cloud-wool covers
house, river, hill -
A heat that strains, it
Winds up air conditioners
And sets fans spinning. -
Heat cracks — crumbles —
Pitters, pours, drips — and drains away
Back to hot and dry. -
In this hot car
Even open windows blow
Sticky, still air -
From warm cement, skinks
Animate in stop motion:
Frame two — three — and gone! -
Wide as playing cards
They flop through hot, yellow air:
Orange butterflies. -
Day keeps us in
Sweating in chilled rooms, until
Cool, orange dusk
